How Ndegeya Community Clinic is expanding its reach and transforming healthcare

The dedicated healthcare workers at the Ndegeya Community Clinic (NCC) have been making a meaningful difference—often under challenging circumstances, but always with an unwavering commitment to their community. Laudara Foundation is deeply proud of this team, whose tireless efforts continue to bring care, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.

Building on this strong foundation, the NCC has recently taken an important next step in its development. Over the past months, the clinic has evolved into a fully recognised medical center, significantly expanding the level of care it can provide. While the name remains unchanged, the impact of its services has grown considerably.

A key milestone in this transition has been the collaboration with Dr. Lukundo, a registered medical doctor who now leads the clinical care at the facility. The center is now registered under the Doctors and Dental Practitioners Council. This marks a major step forward in both quality of care and professional recognition. The clinic is also now officially registered with the Uganda Registration Services Bureau.

This transformation was driven by a clear need within the community. For many patients, even minor surgical procedures previously required referral to distant hospitals—journeys that were often costly, delayed, and in some cases, tragically unsafe. Today, that reality is changing.

The medical center now offers both major and minor surgeries on-site. This has already led to life-saving interventions. Just a couple of weeks ago, a woman with an infected ovarian cyst successfully underwent surgery at the center and is now recovering well. For patients like her, receiving care close to home makes all the difference—not only medically, but also in terms of trust and peace of mind.

These achievements are the result of strong teamwork. Under Dr. Lukundo’s leadership, staff members including Michael, Miriam, Shaban and Ritah have worked with great dedication to prepare and assist in surgical procedures. Even with limited resources, the team has shown creativity and resilience, ensuring that patients receive the care they need.

One recent case highlights both the urgency of care and the importance of having surgical services available locally. A 13-year-old boy was brought to the clinic after sustaining a serious injury while playing football. By the time he arrived, the affected testicle had become necrotic and could no longer be saved.

The team acted quickly. After careful preparation, sterilization of instruments, and obtaining consent from the family, Dr. Lukundo performed the operation with support from the clinical team. The procedure was completed successfully, preventing further complications and infection.

The boy is now recovering well under close monitoring and medical care. While the outcome was shaped by the severity of the injury, the availability of timely surgical intervention at Ndegeya made a critical difference in his recovery and overall health.

In addition to these cases, other procedures—including treatments for conditions such as hemorrhoids—have already been carried out successfully, further demonstrating the clinic’s growing capacity.

With these developments, Ndegeya Community Clinic now effectively operates at the level of a Health Center IV, offering doctor-led services and surgical care that were previously unavailable locally.

Of course, this progress also brings new challenges. Expanding services requires additional equipment and resources, such as oxygen supply systems and improved surgical facilities. The team continues to address these needs step by step, with determination and focus.

This progress would not have been possible without the continued support of the Laudara Foundation, made possible through the generous contributions of the Joanne Foundation.
The story of Ndegeya is one of dedication, partnership, and tangible impact. What began as a small community clinic is steadily becoming a center of reliable, life-saving care—thanks to a team that works tirelessly every day and the support that stands firmly behind them.
